Beverley
Craven has had a fantastic musical past and back bringing us more. Her career
has spawned for over 20 years. Not known to be a part of the usual hectic
showbiz biz scene, Beverley's done an amazing job of raising a family and
maintaining a music career.
From her first album 'Beverley Craven' to 'Love Scenes, 'Mixed Emotinons'
, and 'The Best of Beverley Craven', Beverley is set to win hearts and minds
with her latest instalment.
Not afraid of new conquests, Beverley tells Reminiscin' about her up coming
projects, her joys of returning to touring the UK and also her personal take
on the UK's fashion scene.
After
7 years, how does it feel to be making a 'return' to the music scene?
I still can't quite believe how much I'm enjoying being back on the road.
I keep waiting for the bubble to burst! I'm having such a good time playing
live with my band. I thought, "I'll just go out and do a few gigs, and
see how I feel". I'm so much more relaxed with this set of shows, and
I hardly get nervous at all now - just excited.
How
would you describe your music to someone who has just come across your album
for the first time?
My songs are easy-listening, classically influenced songs from the heart.
I love a strong melody and melancholy sentiments. My wish is for people to
feel something when they hear my songs.
What
where your inspirations behind this album?
So far I've writen six songs - one is about my best friend's husband, another
is about an old love, there's one about some friends of mine who split up
for a short while and then got back together and one was written for a film,
but never used. I wrote one song for the MD of Sony Music (weird, I know!)
and the last one is a little more kooky than my usual stuff - it's about me.
As
a songwriter yourself, what can your fans expect to hear from your new material?
I try to vary my writing as much as possible, but my songs are all piano-based
and my voice is as it is, so I think my new stuff is 'more of the same' in
many ways.
Your known for your orchestrated ballads, is that some we can expect to
hear on this album?
Orchestras tend to be expensive(!), and as much as I love the sound of them,
I probably won't be using one this time.
What
are your favourite tracks and why?
My favourite track is usually the one I happen to be working on. I love being
in the middle of writing a new song. I wake up in the morning and think, "Yes!
I've got to get that one finished today."
Who
right now reminds you of a young Beverley Craven?
There's a lot more female singer/song writer/piano players around now, but
I think each of them is an individual and none particularly remind me of me.
After spending quite a bit of time away, do you have a preference, in terms
of being behind the scenes as opposed to being in the limelight?
If you mean, do I prefer being a full-time mum to being out 'in the limelight'
then the two are polar opposites. I felt that I had to be there for my children
when they were all so young, but I also didn't really feel I had a choice
in the matter. Not that I resented it, but being a stay-at-home mum is the
hardest job in the world: It's very long hours of continuous, unpaid work
which is often boring and tedious; repetitious and tiring; frustrating and
often lonely. Going out to work is much easier. But I wouldn't have missed
being a mum for the world. So which do I prefer? One is a relief from the
other, I suppose.
As
a mother with three daughters, what is your take on the size zero debate?
Do you have any future concerns as your children do bear celebrity status
because of both you and your husband's music career's?
My main concern is not so much with kids being underweight as being undernourished.
Having been ill myself two years ago, I know the importance of having a strong,
healthy immune system.
I've always preferred the look of a slightly fuller figure anyway, but with
good muscle tone. Skinny is OK for an eight year old but, in my opinion, not
the body shape for a grown woman to aspire to.
Do
you like keeping up with fashion trends at all, or are you very particular
about what you like to wear?
After all these years I now know my body shape: I have quite boyish hips,
so I go for clothes that give me a bit more shape; I have a longish torso
with not much of a waist; my shoulders are quite broad, so I have to be careful
with halter-necks. It's a case of buying stuff that disguises my not-so-good
points rather than going for something because it's fashionable.
Do
you have any favourite accessories of items of clothing?
I have a wrap around dress from LK Bennet that I can wear with either long
boots or over a pair of trousers or just with heeled shoes. I love the fact
that it's so versatile.
When you decided to take a break away from the music scene, did you expect
to stay away for so long?
I thought I'd given up music forever. I called my manager and said, "I
don't want to work ever again!" (I'm a bit of an 'all-or-nothing' girl).
Thankfully, he didn't take me seriously.
Living
out in Buckinghamshire and the hustle and bustle of the music world must seem
like such a huge contrast, what are your thoughts on that?
I thought I'd stay in London forever, but things change, don't they? Now I
love it out in the fresh air, where I can see the stars at night and road
rage is a thing of the past.
Do
any of your children appear to be following in you and your husband musical
footsteps? Is this a career path you would want them to take?
My eldest daughter, Mollie, is in a band called, 'Paperjamm'. She plays the
bass guitar and also the piano. I wouldn't be surprised if she had some sort
of career in the music business. My middle daughter, Brenna, wants to be an
actress. She said, "
not like Lindsey Lohan, I want to be more of
a Kate Winslett." My youngest, Connie, wants to be an artist and live
in Paris. I just want them all to follow their dreams.
Are you looking forward to being back on the road again, showcasing your
new material? Any anxieties at all?
I love being on the road, as long as we don't wander too far from home, or
for too long. And I don't fancy going over-seas.
Are
you working on any other projects at the moment?
I've just finished writing my autobiography so I'd like to get that on sale
at my shows together with a CD package. I'm just a little apprehensive about
the 'baring all' aspect of it, but then, there'd be no point in writing a
book about my life if it wasn't a truthful, warts 'n' all, take me as I am,
kinda thing. Hopefully, I won't be judged too harshly, morally and grammatically,
and it might give people an insight into the music business; what it's like
to give birth; what it feels like to be diagnosed with breast cancer, that
kind of thing
