Reminiscin' takes a closer look at Alanis Morissette's new found role in the controversial play 'The Exonerated'.

In recent times cinematography has been confined to the Nicole Kidman's and Demi Moore's of the film industry, yet an influx of musicians have jumped on to the movie band wagon. Are artists umbilically attached to the world of films and strip back plays?

We have seen Madonna embark on a variety of audacious roles, the multi faceted Barbara Streisand in a stretch of films and Broadway, 'Meet The Fockers' and 'Funny Girl' and let's not forget former kid on the block, Mark Wahlburg in the highly acclaimed 'Boogie Nights' and 'Three Kings'. So as music lovers should we have any pre requisites on musicians who diverge into an acting career? Quite simply, NO! As Alanis Morissette shows us how it's done to perfection.

In her latest depiction Alanis is the guest-star for the new theatre production devised by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen 'The Exonerated'. The play dictates the story of six individuals who face the injustice of the US judicial system. Alanis reprises the role as Sonia "Sunny" Jacobs, a tranquil hippie and mother of two who is condemned for a murder she did not commit. The verbatim play is based on interviews, court transcriptions and public records.

The Exonerated, stages Alanis eloquently as she recreates Sunny Jacobs account. It is through Alanis portrayal of Sunny's anguish and perseverance throughout the play that makes it an essential viewing. Her display of Sunny who was sentenced to 16 years in jail and lost her partner to the electric chair is a harrowing testimony documented dramatically by Alanis. Her powerful performance touches the pain and encapsulates the depth of torment incarcerated by the 'extoneree'. Alanis says, "I feel very aligned with her and uplifted by her courage and faith. Her ability to remain in a place of love is a guiding force for me."

Having witnessed Alanis's role in 'The Exonerated', her credibility as an actress/performer was infallible - securing composure and texture in her content her narration dispels any monotonous rapture. She was brimming expressionism, tone variation and assertiveness. It is only fair to say that Alanis Morissette exceeds where many artists would fail.
