Keeping with that momentum up until today, New Edition are now celebrating their 25th anniversary: which is needless to say no small feat.
Spending time individually and enjoying success with their solo careers they have reunited and are continuing on their route of success. Hitting the roads and making sure their fans remain in tune with them as they continue to tour, Reminiscin’ spent some time with Michael Bivins catching up on everything from earliest memories; embarrassing moments and where they have reached in life as men today.
What are your memories of your first tour?
It was fun!.....From our first album, we had a chance to go all the way around the world and see all of our fans. All the screaming girls, really made us feel like we were superstars.
How do you think an ‘outsider’ would describe touring with New Edition?
Some of them felt, the girls were screaming because we were little, and they were thinking, we were the new Jackson 5. Some of them enjoyed touring with us, because we had the biggest tours...alot of people wanted to open up for us, our first major tour was with Run DMC and Shannon 'Let the music play'.
How does the group prepare for a tour?
We usually take a month out, we do a couple of weeks putting the show together, the routines and the song. Then, we do a couple of weeks with the band, working out the routines live...as part of our production rehearsals.
Has there been any embrassing or funny moments on stage with New Edition?
When they blow the fog on stage (for special effects), sometimes the mist of the fog is still on stage, then you come out, dancing all hard...then you slip and bust your butt! because the stage is so slippery.
Or, somebody sings the wrong verse. Instead of singing the first verse, they sing the second verse and the crowd starts laughing, because they know the song!
What foods do you like to eat on tour?
I like seafood...I like lobster tail or king crab leg.
How quickly does everyone pick up dance routines for your performances on tour?
For the most part, everyone is pretty in tune. Everybody knows our style, we know the counts, it's embedded in us. It would take real splits, quick spinning or sliding, to get us out of place...they are the only things.
Who do you bring on the road with you?
Do you have entourages?
It's just us and our band, there is no entourage. We travel light and keep it moving....were old school.
Were not in to 'let's go on tour, bring the whole neighbourhood and have party'.
How has New Edition changed over the years?
Hopefully, we are more handsome! I think we have matured, we are married...a few of us have children. As men, I think we figured something's out.
What has been the most memorable moment?
Everything has been good, it has been a good 25 years, it's hard to choose one...it could be 100,000 people singing our song, or hearing our old song on the radio, when you are in the car (with a bunch of people) and everyone is laughing at how you sound, or old picture when our haircuts were crazy!
What is the most luxurious tour bus you have been on to date?
Maybe the first one, because we thought it was a house on wheels....it had a TV and beds, it was something we had never seen before.
Which 3 items must you have back stage in dressing rooms?
1. Gummy Bears
2. King Crab Legs
3. Cranberry Juice / Cran apple
Putting music aside, how do you spend time together as a group and enjoy yourselves...when you are on the road?
We just do breakfast and go to the club after. Everyone is usually so busy, with different ideas and plans. We fit it in, when we can.
What are your plans for upcoming New Edition tours and future UK shows?
I love the UK!... I hope we come over ASAP, it's been such a long time, since we have been there. I can't wait to come back over, to the downtown area (Leicester Square / Trocadero). I am excited about that.... you can always get a fresh new pair of shoes (from the UK), that are not in the States, so I am looking forward to that.
Are there any new projects you’re working on for 2008?
I have a new group coming out called TRU Soul from Texas, they are with Sporty Rich Enterprises, that's my new record company.
