Best known for his work with the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and being a member of Shalamar, Jeffrey Daniel is boosting his career with the a soon to be released solo album.
Dancer to choreographer, singer to songwriter – there is no area of entertainment he can’t go and conquer.
Always ready to begin new feats and take on challenges, Jeffrey tells us all that he has learned along his tremendous journey and shows that he is making this a night to remember.
Whose video have you enjoyed working on the most? and why?
It's funny you should mention that because I’ve just finished a video, Tuesday to Thursday, working with Incognito and that was a great pleasure, because I love Bluey so much. Bluey has got to be one of the sweetest, nicest guys: he’s just amazing and talented. His energy and sense of giving is just amazing, so he asked me to get involved with it, so I said yeah, and I knew some of the dancers - so it was just a fun day of shooting.
What’s the most inspirational video you’ve come across so far?
A lot people might think it would be the videos I did with Michael Jackson ("Bad", "Smooth Criminal" and "Ghosts"), but I have to say Vanessa Williams because it was right after the Miss America scandal thing. She kinda laid low for a while and then decided to come out with a musical career. A lot of people where thinking that it wasn’t going to work out and they didn’t even know she had a singing talent. And we where rehearsing for the video, she came in sweat pants, she tied her hair back, she had on sneakers and she just wanted to work, you could see that she really wanted it. Some of the moves that I had in mind for some of the guys, like getting on the ground and stuff, she would get involved and I had to tell her no, no, no it's just for the guys! Now, I look at her today, she has become a world class star actress entertainer. So that was my most inspirational.
What are your hobbies outside music?
If am in Japan snowboarding, skating, I’ve been a roller-skater all my life, reading books, I love books – I’ve just read both of Obama’s books dreams of a father and the audacity of hope. I’ve just picked up on some Nigerian authors that am starting to get into, and I think a lot people should take heed because Nigerian authors are on the rise. And I love to cook – everyone is so surprised at that but I love to cook – no one makes better pancakes than I do. My grandmother taught me how to do that.
What aspects of yourself do you like the most? Singer? Dancer? Gutarist? Songwriter?
That’s difficult to separate because I do them all. I’ve always done them all, so I would have to say my ability to communicate with people, through my dancing, through my music, it wouldn’t be much if you weren’t able to communicate through it. Because, I am not the best dancer, I am not the best guitarist, I am not the best singer. But I think my ability to connect with people, makes it happen that’s why people enjoy watching and hearing me.
What’s the most expensive item you have on you today?
I would think my jeans, I got them in Japan – it’s called Red Pepper, they are really popular over there. They took Japan by storm and they have all the different sizes there. I’m a bit of a fashion victim sometimes. I like things because it’s cool – not because of the name brand – am not into the it’s got to be Gucci, it’s got to be Prada.
What are your shopping habits like? Do you ridiculously spend or are you a sensible shopper?
I can’t be sensible – it has to be some thing I really like, then if I really like it - I won’t mind spending. And it has to inspire you to want it.
What really irritates you?
I would have to say ignorance – you know like prejudice, or bigotry or people just hating because someone’s achieving something and their not. I would have to say ignorance.
What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done so far?
I can’t tell you the real one, but so many things happen to me because am such a clown. I was at Subway and it was kinda late, so they are closing up and getting ready to close up. I am not gonna say who, but somebody farted and the staff where right there and the popped up like who the hell??
What’s the best pick up line you always use?
When I see someone I like, I can’t talk to them. If I can get around to finally speaking to – I just try to be natural and say something like – Hello, how you are you? Or what’s your name? – I don’t know. I’ve never been good at that. I miss out a lot because, if I don’t speak to them they take off, or some other guy gets there.
What’s the one thing you would like to accomplish by 2009?
I would like to see Obama in the White House – that's at the top of my list. Then next I would like to release my solo project, and I would like to work with some UK artists and get some production work done. That’s work wise, after that I would like to spend time with my family.
I’ve been living overseas more over the past 20 years. I just came back from America and I had the chance to reconnect with them. Also, I recently spent time with my father in April, this was the 3rd time I’d met him. I was a guest in his home, he lives in Arizona and I never expected to have a relationship with my own father. I only knew of one side of him, he’s older now. So to actually connect with my father and have to have a real relationship with him – I am just so glad I’d reached out and made it happen.
It was more positive than I expected. It's such a personal thing to talk about, but I don’t mind talking about it, because I let my Myspace friends know about it and all these stories kept coming back to me of people in similar positions. I know of one person who drives past their fathers’ house and see him on the porch and they don’t stop and say hi. I haven’t seen my father in about 20 yrs. He wasn’t what I expected him to be and I just believe that if you do fall out with someone – take the chance to fix things, build bridges between you.
You might lose the opportunity to reconnect. I went there prepared for the worst, but I got the most out of it. It's such an amazing thing and you grow so much because of it. Even if it doesn’t go as you expected, at least you where able to say - you tried.
What’s your favourite track on your new album?
At the moment, ‘Back to the World’ and ‘Girl Cry’ – I am a spiritual person and it's like everything in the universe is connected. So in the song, I am saying that if you make a girl cry, maybe some where in the Malaysian forest a butterfly dies, or if you make a girl cry, deep in the oceans the whales begin to cry. Or if you make a girl cry, every star in heaven pauses, until the sun release a sigh. So it's like fella’s don’t make your girl cry – make her happy. It’s a nice song.
Which track did you find the most difficult to record and why?
I think all of them – me standing at the helm of being lead vocalist of all of my songs – it's still new to me – because I am coming from a group like Shalamar. Howard is such a brilliant singer and to be in a group with a singer of the calibre of Howard Hewitt and then, me listening to Luther Vandross. I listen to him and think who am I? You have to get used to hearing yourself, or at least learning to trust your own vocals.
