There has always been a conjoint meaning to sampling, some cynics refer to it as copying, others call it creative, but to Marva, whose music has been the resonance for several Hip Hop and R&B producers it's a lyrical showdown of great craftsmanship.
But to Marva her definition is somewhat different, "To know the way that they were done, and to know that they are hits now, sometimes just knocks me over, because I would never have thought of it. With the new technology they have today, they sound so much better to me than they did in the Sixties, but at the same time some things I think should not be touched."
Though years have gone by since her stint with James Brown Revue, Marva's music has infiltrated to various genres, most famously her hits, 'Unwind Yourself' and 'It's My Thing' were sampled in rap records. So it must be endearing to know that DJs and Hip Hoppers alike are still gasping for her beats? "I appreciate the Hip Hop artists pulling them out, because it does cause circulation of the name. You hear a few people talk about it and you might hear it play," she adds.
"With the technology today, I am able to listen to the songs and enjoy the songs. I can sit and listen to it from a different view. I don't listen to it as it being Marva Whitney; I listen to the songs as I hear it." exclaims Marva.
Marva
also explains why musicians like herself and peers will never be forgotten,
"Our music back then was what you would call foundation music. We know
that a foundation has to be sturdy in order to go on for years on years. She
concludes, "There is a saying that a 'house built on sinking sand, will
not stand.' But these songs have proven they have been built on cement. The
importance of it, it will never fly away and be forgotten-it is the foundation!"
Well, Marva they also say 'History repeats!
Marva Whitney's new album will be released in Japan on 15th December and worldwide in February 2007
