Whether, cheesy or not we have all been smoked out by their catchy lyrics, 'My Cherie Amour' and every revellers favourite, 'Brown Girl in the ring'. Now imagine Boney M's musical catalogue displayed on the big stage. Exactly!
If anything will capture the audience it is the vibrancy of the cast. Rehashing Boney M's era requires backbone and resilience, and the cast certainly had stamina to upkeep Boney M's journey. Despite the hoo-hah surrounding Harvey and Javine's appearance; the sparkles shine blindingly for Rose (Camilla Beeput) Ma Baker (Michelle Collins) and Pearl (Melanie La Barrie). Their onstage presence overly outlines their persona and charisma of their roles.
The dialogues were at times comical and included an array of cockney slang delivered eloquently by Ma Baker (Michelle Collins) and the thick patois lines verbalised by young Sonny (Khai Shaw) and Pearl (Melanie La Barrie). There were a few punch lines, particularly the MC battle scene, whereby Shake (Harvey) and Swing (Jay Mckay) rip into rhymes, "How can you step up on stage with your hair receding".
Unfortunately Daddy Cool downplays to an esoteric storyline, however, greatly redeemed by the eye-gagging choreography and kaleidoscopic of costume wear. Being apart of the audience it was difficult to focus on one dancer as the crew simultaneously performed back flips, leg splits and a gymnasium of stretches.
In encapsulating Boney M's epoch the settings and props were visually relevant especially the Notting Hill Street Parade Trinidad Carnival. The audience were witnesses to an excess of synchronised booty-shaking moves, as well as flamboyant headdresses of gold glittering feathers and matching leotards.
Daddy Cool, certainly lived up to its expectations as a musical. In retrieving the roots of the past, it is the traditional sounds of Boney M's forgotten tracks that grasp your attention. Vocally, the casting exceeded in lung capacity, tracks such as, 'Hooray Hooray It's A Holi-Holiday', 'By The Rivers Of Babylon', 'Baby Do You Wanna Bump?' and 'Sunny' were shouldered well by the entire crew..
If it
is old jams and nostalgia that zaps your eardrums, then why be cool about
it - join in the fun!
